This study examines the population growth in Bihar and other demographic aspects. It shows that the growth of population since independence has increased gradually up to 2001, with a peak in 1991-2001 of 27.11%. A comparative study of the rate of population growth in India and Bihar for the period 1951-2001 showed that it was lower in Bihar up to 1961-71 and almost the same for the next two decades, but the rate of growth of population in Bihar was much larger than India during the period 1991-2001. Sex ratio of Bihar has fallen gradually during 1961-1991 for both ruraland urban sectors, but has increased in the decade 1991-2001, and the percentage of urban population was 6.78 in 1951 which has increased gradually to 13.35 in 2001. Literacy rate of Bihar is much lower than that of India, and alarge proportion of labour force is engaged in primary sector followed by service sector and then industrial sector. |
