According to this study The UN-HABITAT report, Enhancing Urban Safety and Security: Global Report on Human Settlements 2007, identifies three major threats to the safety and security of cities: crime and violence, insecurity of tenure and forced evictions, and natural and human-made disasters. Crime and violence, often seen as discrete events, are the result of underlying long-term processes and choices related to global economic changes, national conditions, and urban development.<br/><br/>The report highlights the association between the rapid pace of urbanization and the growth in city size and density with increased crime and violence. The layout and fabric of cities provide opportunities for crime, and city growth is a strong indicator of crime rates. The report also indicates that almost all of the world's urban growth in the next two decades will be absorbed by cities in the developing world, whose public institutions are least equipped to deal with the challenges of rapid urbanization.<br/><br/>The purpose of studying crime patterns over space and time is to discover regularities that help in understanding the phenomenon of crime. The report suggests that crime patterns change over time as society changes, and therefore, relating temporal changes in crime to changes in other aspects of society is a potentially important topic for research with great social relevance.<br/><br/>Overall, the report underscores the need for concerted efforts to enhance urban safety and security, particularly in rapidly growing urban centers, by addressing the underlying social, economic, and political processes that contribute to crime and violence. |
